Professional Activities:
Basu founded and managed several international professional organizations, most important of which is the International Secretariat and Conference Series on Circulating Fluidized Beds. This organization promotes the development and use of CFB technology through a tri-annual international conference held in countries including China, Germany, USA, Canada, France and Japan.
He managed a number of very large international projects involving teams of academics and engineers from different countries. Goals of these projects were to spread environment friendly technology and its absorption.

Administrative Work:
He administered a research centre in Canada and led a department in a Government organization and one in a private industry in India. Recently he successfully managed a large project of building a boiler in a power plant, which included supervision of a team of professionals, contractors, vendors and workers. He also manages a successful private R&D company in Canada.

Dr. Basu has been associated with the development of fluidized bed boilers in industry, government laboratories and universities since 1972. His research at TUNS and Dalhousie University on circulating fluidized bed has allowed him to consult for boiler and energy companies in Europe, North America and Asia.

Dr. Basu is a specialist in energy and environment. His specific research interest is in fluidized bed boilers for control of emission and clean power generation from coal.

 

MAJOR CONTRIBUTIONS to science and industry:

1.   He discovered that certain types of old pulverized coal fired boiler can be modified to operate as environment friendly circulating fluidized bed boiler.  This process has been accepted by Greenfield Research Incorporated, a  technology company, for commercialization.
2.   Extended fins on the crown of boiler wall tubes to enhance heat absorption in CFB boilers.
3.   Designed and developed world's first commercial fluidized bed boiler co-firing rice husk and coal.
4.   First Mechanistic model of heat transfer in circulating fluidized bed.
5.   First experimental investigation on burning rate and combustion mechanism in circulating fluidized beds.
6.   First experimental data on heat transfer in pressurized circulating fluidized bed combustor.
7.  Developed and built the advanced sub-compact CFB boiler at Kolaghat Thermal Power station to augment power using waste mill rejects.

 

Background and Experience:
Internationally recognized educator and specialist in Energy and Environment, with a 30-year long professional career in energy, the environment and power generation.

Multimedia Development for teaching Graduate course
Director of CIDA sponsored project on Human resource development (1993-95).   Basu pioneered the development of a graduate level multimedia based course.  This work was reviewed and accepted in American Journal of Chemical Engineering Education.  Presently he is engaged in multimedia development in two other areas. 

Computer Aided Design Tool
A computer aided tool for design of Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler was developed with assistance from Electricite de France.  This world's first commercial software for evaluation of CFB boiler, CFBCAD, is being produced and marketed by a Canadian company, Greenfield Research Incorporated.

Consultant (Alcan International), 1989-98
Retained as a special consultant to various energy, process and environment related projects undertaken by Alcan International and its Research and Development Center at Jonquire, Quebec.

ABB ABL Limited Technical Evaluation of Retrofit technology. (1996) in India
Worked with the Engineering Division of ABB ABL Limited, the second largest power company in India and a member of the ABB group for evaluation of CFB conversion technology in revamping a 120 Mwe pulverized coal fired boiler.  The evaluation examined details of the engineering modification to be made on the existing plant and associated problems.  The study also worked out a price estimate for the entire conversion project.

West Bengal State Electricity Board, ( 1995-96) Techno-economic feasibility study
At the request of the Power Ministry of the Government of West Bengal, India, a techno-economic feasibility study was carried out to examine the feasibility of revamping a 120 Mwe pulverized coal plant at their Santaldihi Thermal power Station using the environment friendly CFB technology.

Consultant for Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) (1989-95) in Canada and India
Developed and managed for 6 years an institutional development program on Creation of a Center for Combustion Studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.  This project trained engineers and educators on clean coal technology and air pollution technologies.  Multimedia instructional development laboratory and an advanced energy research laboratory were developed.  The program conducted about 8 seminars and courses and trained 5 teachers in Canada.

Association of Colleges and Universities of Canada (1990-96) in Canada and China
Developed and managed a 5 year collaborative program with the Zhejiang University of China on Transfer of Circulating Fluidized Bed Technology for low grade Chinese coals.  This collaborative project through training workshops raised the awareness of Chinese decision makers which prompted the Chinese government declare CFB a national project.  This project provided active support to Chinese industry and university laboratories in developing CFB technology for Chinese coals.  Promotion and support provided by this project helped China move from none to the biggest CFB boiler user in the world.

International Development Research Center (1985-90) In India and Canada
Coordinated and led the project on transfer of environment friendly CFB technology for high ash Indian coal.  This 5 years project helped Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, the largest boiler maker in India, to train their engineers in Canada and absorb the CFB technology for use in India.  The collaborative effort designed, built and commissioned the first CFB boiler of South Asia.  This example paved the way for increasing use of large number of environment friendly CFB boilers in the entire South Asia.

Financial Analysis of Project & Power Policy
Basu has done extensive work on financial analysis of power projects and policy implications.   This work resulted in another software, PlantCost, marketed by Greenfield Research Incorporated.

Project Evaluation Canada
Was selected to review and evaluate the Government of Canada's expenditure on coal R&D through their Energy Mines and Resources Department. Developed a new computer aided tool for evaluation of CFB boilers, CFBCAD®.

Member of Technical Mission to USA
Accompanied the Premier of Nova Scotia on a Technical Mission to Massachusetts.  He was invited as a technical expert on Acid Rain to accompany the Premier of Nova Scotia to the New England Governor's meeting.

Professional Training Courses
Organized and instructed short courses on Fluidized bed boiler and Air Pollution Control and Multimedia based Instruction in Calcutta, Delhi, Florence, Halifax, Hangzhou, Kharagpur, London, Lyon, Naples, Pune, Florence, Bangkok, Hanoi, Nagpur, Alexandria, San Diego, and Istanbul.
