Degree Programs

The Master of Engineering, MEng is a coursework degree requiring at least seven courses, one graduate seminar and a project. The MEng is a professionally-oriented terminal degree (does not lead to a PhD). Financial support is seldom available for MEng students. This degree normally takes from 12 to 18 months to complete.

An MEng project need not involve the discovery or creation of new knowledge, as is the case in a MASc or PhD. An MEng project must show the studentís ability to carry through to completion a project of a credible level of difficulty that draws on the knowledge and experience gained through advanced undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering course work.

The Master of Applied Science, MASc requires at least four courses, one graduate seminar and a research thesis. This degree normally takes two years to complete. The thesis must include an original contribution to the discipline and should include material of publishable quality.
The Doctor of Philosophy, PhD is primarily a research degree and usually requires a MASc for admission.  It requires at least four courses, two graduate seminars, a comprehensive examination and an original research thesis.  It should take about four years to complete. The thesis must be a significant and original contribution to the discipline and should include significant material of publishable quality.
