Welcome to the home of Dalhousie Universities 2008-2009 Supermileage Team

The Dalhousie Supermileage team competed in the 2009 Shell Eco-Marathon over April 15th -18th, 2009. This was the first time they have competed in a Supermileage competition since 2003.  The result was arespectable 10th place with a fuel mileage of 782mpg, out of 43 internal combustion entries.

They team would like to thank there sponsors list below, who made this finish possible

The competition challenges participants to design fuel efficient vehicles to promote conservation as concerns of world non-renewable resource supplies are constantly being challenged in media and political circles.

After many technical difficulties, the team was able carry out several successful runs. The best of which was a fuel mileage of 782.8Mpg. This improvement over yesterdays result is attributed to changing the transmissions gear ratio, installation of an external to body air intake, and the driver skill and strategy.

After the first day of competition we are currently sitting in 13th place with a fuel mileage of 300mpg. We expect this figure to increase greatly tomorrow when we implement our driving strategy.

We would like to thank everyone that attended our Design Project Presentation on April 8, 2009. Your support was very much appericated.

The team is very excited to be leaving for the Eco-Marathon in the next few days. It is our hope to be able to update the website on a daily basis with results from the track. So stay tuned.

If anyone is interested in attending our final design project presentation, it is going to be held on Wednesday, April 8 @ 4:00pm in the Architecture Auditorium (H19) on Sexton Campus (1360 Barrington Street).

The car has been crated and shipped via UPS to Fontana California. If everything goes well the car should arrive in California on the 10th of April.

04/02/09

- The body has arrived back from paint, it is now a very nice white, with our newly installed tinted windows.

- Thursday night we preformed our final pre-California test run. The issues that we had been having with the clutch mechanism, fuel system, intake, and exhaust have been resolved. The car is running very well

03/31/09

The body has been sent to paint. Halifax Chrysler Dodge Jeep are graciously painting the vehicle for the team free of charge

03/29/09

Sorry for the lack of updates over the past month, but the team has been very busy preparing the car for the shipping deadline next Friday.

- On Saturday the 28th we conducted the first vehicle test. Overall the test went very well; however we still need to work on the clutch mechanism, Exhaust system, and Carb tuning

- The body is being prepped for paint on Monday. The two top halves of the body have been joined to allow for the extenstion of the body windows to increase visiblity

02/19/09

- The Dyno is in the final stages in of Calibration, this will allow for extensive engine testing over the study break, next week.

- The Vehicle drivetrain and starter are assembled and working

-Fabrication of frame has begun and will be completed next week

- Looking into painting the existing body and replacing the existing windows

- Expecting the arrival of the new brakes, rims, tires, and wheel hubs this week

02/09/09

- The new dyno mount has been assembled, engine testing to begin this week

- The new frame design has been nearly finalized; a few issues need to be worked out with the steering

- Upon consultation with local composite companies, we have decided it is not practical to produce a new body this year.

Finalizing the design for the vehicles direct drive transmission

01/09/2009

The team has decided to utilize a direct drive system to replace the Rohloff Speedhub. Using a single gear setup presents its own set of design challenges. However, it should allow the team to meet its 85% drivetrain efficiency requirement

01/06/2009

We have conducted research into the engines that would allow us to be competitive with only minor modifications.  With this in mind we have selected the Honda GX35 4-stroke engine

01/01/2009

The second semester of our senior year design project has started with a bang. The plan had been to use a modified Briggs and Stratton engine, which had been used by Dalhousie in previous years at the SAE Supermileage Competition. We were going to couple this engine to a Rohloff Speedhub 14 transmission. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen engine issues and budget overruns we will be unable to continue with the current design
